Inner courtyard

Mashrabiya:  Alcove in wooden lattice windows where water in porous earthen bottles exposed to air currents was cooled by evaporation. Originally a place for drinking. A hallmark of Islamic domestic architecture. Provided protection from the sunrays and offered privacy to women from passers-by. Refers to both the projecting window structure and the screen with lattice grill woodwork.
