Mine Tour

10:00-11:30
History Class - We learned about how they used to mine. The method that they used, was that they would drill holes to stick dynamite in, and then blow it up to get the small gold particles.  When the mine first opened, they would drill the holes by using a chisel and a hammer. The guide said that it would take an entire eight hour shift to drill one hole! Luckily, as technology progressed it didn't take that long.

Houses

11:30-12:00
English Class - For english, we went into the prospector's house after the mine tour. We chose a room and sketched some of the items in the room. The rooms were really neat, they were posh and fancy. The rooms were very small, and so were the items inside. There was a silver tea set in the parlor along with a small upright piano, there was also a lot ot toys in the children's room. I found it interesting that they would bring their entire family with them.

Rides

12:00-1:30
Science Class - For science, we got to go on the roller coasters at Gold Reef City. We had to ride the Anaconda to get the time. In our groups we then caculated the speed, velocity, and acceleration. Anytime we had left over we got to spend in the park.

Technology helped increase the production of gold by extracting it quicker from the walls of the caves and the rocks dug out.  It also helped because the drills used to dig used water and compressed air and that reduced the dust in the mines.  The guide also said that the miners had their own miner's language that wasn't originally developed in the mines but it was developed in the sugar cane fields in South Africa.

I learned that the miners did not use children to work in the mine at all.  I am happy to find that out.  I also learned what a miner did when there was no lighting in the mine.  They would sit down with a candle, knock some holes into the wall, and then drill it.  The gold was first discovered in 1864.  It was very dark in the mine and I did not like it.  It was also hard to breathe in the mine, but I don't know why.

It must have been a horror, to have to go work in the mines, from early in the morning to late in the evening. The workers must have dreaded going to work each day, working for long hours at a time. They wouldn't have enough light for what the needed to get done, and took so much longer because of this.

When we went into the mine I was excited and I learned a lot. One thing I learned was that they put 40 people in one elevator at one time and when we went in it there were only 20 students.

During the houses tours, I have noticed that the rooms were really small. The people living inside the houses seamed to be really rich. They also had a lot of objects made out of gold.
